A Wealth of Talent and Potential to Strengthen our Democracy!

The 2024 election season is already starting to heat up, and Waterfordians will be seeing some familiar names and faces.  Democratic Candidates who have announced include:

Paul Tonko for US Representative for the 20th District (Paul's Website)  (Paul was endorsed by the Saratoga County Democratic Committee on Feb 23, 2004)

Minita Sanghvi for NYS Senator for District 44 (Minita's Website)  (Minita was endorsed by the Waterford Democratic Committee on January 29, and by the Saratoga County Democratic Committee on Feb 23, 2004)

Michele Madigan for Saratoga County Treasurer (Michele's Website)  (Michele was endorsed by the Saratoga County Democratic Committee on Feb 23, 2004)

Waterford Committee Endorses Minita Sanghravi

At our January meeting, the Waterford Democratic Committee had the pleasure of meeting with Minita Sanghvi for a Zoom meeting of about 90 minutes.   All of us were very impressed by Minita’s enthusiasm for making District 44 and all of New York a better state.  She asked for an endorsement from the Waterford Committee, and after a discussion, we were excited to provide it.

Just to offer a personal note about my own response to Minita, I met her briefly at the Jan 6 commemoration event at the Capitol.  But other than that, I did not know her at all before she sat and talked with us.  For the first few minutes of our conversation she struck me as reserved, almost shy, and frankly I wondered if she was up to playing hardball in what is sure to be a tough election game.  But that impression was dispelled as she got wound up and talked about issues, and the barriers she has faced and allies she has made.  Her eloquence and her passion were convincing and winning.  So that by the end of the meeting I was new member of her cheering squad.  I think she struck all the committee members present that way … one of our members told me “she was terrific!”

So I think we have a great candidate to go up against Jim Tedisco.  That could be a heavy lift, but based on her accomplishments, experience, and eagerness to help her fellow citizens, we are convinced she has a great shot at winning this race.  You will be hearing more in this newsletter about Minita and the campaign in March.  Meanwhile, take a look at her website, and I think you will get a sense of what I'm talking about.  ______________________________

Other Notable Candidacy Announcements

As a last note about 2024 candidates, there is one more item that is appropriate to mention in regard to congressional District 21, represented by Elise Stefanik, who does NOT represent Waterford.

So, we don’t need to dread seeing her name on our own District 20 ballot.  Thank God!  Right?
But maybe a few of us might offer some sort of support for her Democratic opponents.

What opponents?

There are, at this point, two Democratic primary candidates.  To be sure, it's a low bar to be more sane, ethical, and truthful than Stefanik.  But both of these candidates seem highly qualified.

I had the pleasure of briefly meeting and listening to an impressive presentation by one of them, Steve Holden, at an event on 1/6/2024.  Steve’s website can be found here.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Feb 12, another candidate, attorney Paula Collins of Petersburg, announced her candidacy.  A great newspaper article laying out her philosophy and reasons for running can be found here, and her ballotpedia.com entry gives a good thumbnail resume.  There are also two other non-Democratic candidates that maybe should be mentioned.
